Rent a Cyprus villa and do your part for climate change
Eco-conscious holiday makers considering booking a Cyprus villa may be interested to learn that a new directive on energy-saving standards could have a significant impact on its buildings.
Under EU rules, all new buildings are required to be energy-efficient and powered primarily by renewable energy by 2021.
According to the Cyprus Mail, environment commissioner Charalambos Theopemptou explained the directive is an "important step" because it will encourage the construction of carbon-neutral buildings.
"We expect to see not only well-built and well-insulated houses, but more photovoltaics and wind power, especially on tall buildings," he was quoted by the news provider as saying.
"It will actually change the face of buildings."
The move comes shortly before world leaders are to meet in Copenhagen for an international summit on carbon emissions and climate change.
As EU members work to reduce their carbon footprints and dependence on fossil fuels, holidays in destinations such as Cyprus may well become more popular with internationals concerned about climate change.
Cyprus is well-placed to take advantage of renewable energy, particularly solar panels, as it enjoys almost year-round sunshine.
