Record-breaker to boost Cyprus holiday numbers?
The world's biggest beach towel was unveiled in Protaras over the weekend and managed to get into the Guinness Book of World Records, Cyprus holiday makers may like to know.
According to the Cyprus Mail, the towel was 64.2 metres long and 31 metres wide, beating the previous record holder, which measured 48 metres long and 23 metres wide. The mayor of Paralimni commented that the event had brought a publicity boost for Cyprus.
Some 2,500 spectators flocked to Protaras to see the towel being laid out for the Guinness representative. Live entertainment was also on hand to keep the crowds occupied.
"Being a tourist destination, we wanted to promote the island and do something connected with sun, sea and sand," remarked Maria Procopiou of Aeolos Travel, which organised the event.
Those looking to go on a Cyprus villa holiday in Protaras may be interested to learn that the area also boasts attractions such as breathtaking views from the church of Prophet Elias, various museums and monasteries, and a host of annual events.
