Palouze fair, Vouni, Cyprus

The vineyard villages of Cyprus have been rapidly industrialising in recent years, as the wines of the region increase in worldwide popularity.

Nevertheless, some traditions from the vineyards' ancient roots do survive, especially in the celebrations which happen in villages across the island each September.

One of the most popular is the 'Palouze' fair at Vouni, near Limassol, which will be held throughout the month.

The festival is named after the product which the village is most famous for: a blancmange made from grape juice and cornflour - although non alcoholic - a tasty dessert which was invented in the village.

Stalls showcasing local food and drink will be up and running for the fair; the typically sprightly and upbeat folk music of the region will also be played by local performers, accompanied by traditional dancing.

Cypriot food is rich and varied even by Greek standards, with the Lebanese, Turkish and Italian conquests which the island has been subjected to in its past all leaving their mark on its cuisine.

Daytrippers to the fair can also make the short journey to the British-owned and funded donkey sanctuary nearby.
