Investigation of underwater wreck
One of the few shipwrecks of the classical period that is in such good condition, the wreck could reveal information about the nautical and economic history of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Speaking to the Cyprus Mail, the department of Antiquities, which is commissioning the research, said the wreck would throw light on commercial relations in the area, as well as: "The role of Cyprus in these transport routes during the last phases of the Cypriot city-kingdoms as well as on types and sizes of ships amongst others."
The Research Unit of Archaeology of the University of Cyprus has done the research that focused on documenting the wreck by using photographs and drawing methods to make a plan for future research teams.
According to the newspaper the wreck could be a commercial vessel of the late classical period and carried amphorae, likely to be from the Greek island of Chios.
