Food 'an important part of Cyprus holidays'

The quality of local food is becoming increasingly important for Britons planning Cyprus villa holidays and other breaks abroad, according to research.

A quarter (26 per cent) of people surveyed by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) said they think about the sort of food they will be able to eat when booking a trip.

More than half (58 per cent) of respondents revealed that they make an effort to sample the cuisine of the country they are visiting.

People planning Cyprus villa holidays this summer will have the opportunity to try the Mediterranean diet, which "holds a special place" in British travellers' hearts, according to the CTO.

Nearly a third (30 per cent) of consumers surveyed by the organisation said Mediterranean cuisine reminds them of being on holiday and 57 per cent said it feels healthier than the food they eat at home.

As well as trying the cheese and meat dishes that the island is famous for, people taking Cyprus holidays this year can sample wine from Europe's highest vineyard.
