Festival of Ancient Greek Drama, Cyprus
One of Greece's proudest cultural legacies will be showcased in Cyprus this summer.
The 11th International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama begins this week and will continue for a month at venues across the island.
Performances are mainly based at the Makarios III Amphitheatre in Nicosia and the ancient Curium Ancient Theatre in Limassol, which has hosted theatre watchers for thousands of years.
The festival, jointly organised by the International Theatre Institute, the Greek Ministry of Education and Culture and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, has the aim of reviving the art form in Cyprus. It will feature eight troupes performing famed classical works by Euripedes, Aristophanes and Sophocles.
The troupes were selected from over 40 applicants - the most in the festival's history - and demonstrate its international appeal: performers from Greece, Germany, Britain, Bulgaria, Italy and Austria join the Cypriot theatre companies this year.
Ancient Greek drama's themes of passion, love, hatred and revenge are as relevant today as they were when they were written.
Spectators at the festival therefore have the opportunity not only to sit in the same arenas as some of the plays' first audiences
