Cyprus holidays 'an affordable option for Brits'

Cyprus holidays are one of the most affordable options on offer to travellers from the UK, according to research by a flight comparison site.

Skyscanner ranked 30 overseas countries in terms of their holiday costs including air travel, with Cyprus emerging as the cheapest followed by Greece and Morocco.

The Mediterranean island was also found to be the least expensive when the cost of flights was not taken into account, while Greece again took second place and South Africa was third.

Skyscanner said it was a "surprise" that Cyprus holidays were found to be the most affordable option, as a survey on consumer perceptions of foreign countries found that the destination was seen as the 14th most expensive.

Barry Smith, the company's director and co-founder, advised travellers to consider the "hidden extras" when planning an overseas break.

"Consumers shouldn't assume because a destination is known to be cheap when you get there, that the total cost won't escalate considerably … once the cost of flights is added, making it a far pricier choice than some of the short haul alternatives," he said.

Both Portugal and Turkey also featured in the list of the ten cheapest holiday destinations for Brits this year.
