Cyprus holiday makers see record high temperatures
Britons on Cyprus villa holidays saw record high temperatures in the country over the weekend.
All all-time high of 46 degrees C was registered in Nicosia, the capital, yesterday (August 1st) - beating the previous record of 44.4 degrees C, which was reached in August 1956.
Tens of thousands of tourists and locals have flocked to Cyprus's beaches as a result of the heatwave, which is expected to continue until Wednesday as temperatures remain four or five degrees above the normal level, according to meteorological department spokesman Kleanthis Nicolaides.
He added that the hot weather is a result of still air covering the island.
Cyprus generally enjoys hot and dry summers from mid-May to mid-September, making this a popular time to go for those looking to book a Cyprus villa holiday.
However, the island sees clear skies and sunshine nearly all year round - there are around 11.5 hours of bright sunshine a day in the summer and 5.5 in December and January - so Britons seeking a cheap villa in Cyprus may benefit from booking outside of these months.
