Coin discovery: Cyprus

Paphos has been the site of yet another archaeological discovery after a team from Italy discovered a batch of coins.

According to reports from the Cyprus Mail, Italian archaeologists discovered 113 ancient coins in Kato Paphos and have handed them to the Antiques Department.

Found in the Paphos archaeological park, behind the Apollo hotel, the discovery was unexpected according to antiques director Pavlos Flourentzos.

He believes the coins are from the early Byzantine period, meaning they should date back to the sixth and seventh centuries AD.

The material used to make the coins is still unknown as they are yet to be cleaned up and examined properly, but it is thought they might be made of copper.

Mr Flourentzos told the Cyprus Mail: "Although the reasons why they were found all together like a treasure is not known, at that time in Cyprus it was around the period of the Arab invasion so someone may have hidden them for safe-keeping."

The coins were well hidden but not as part of a tomb or a grave.
