Brits choose holidays for affordability not aspiration, research shows
Cash-strapped Brits heading abroad to their cheap villas in Cyprus are more likely to look for a good deal than an aspirational trip, new research shows.
Despite the fact that countries such as Sri Lanka, Thailand and South Africa offer great value for money while travellers are in the country, and the opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime trip, Brits will be deterred by high travel prices and opt to stay closer to home.
These were the findings from group research by Post Office Travel Money.
Sarah Munro, Post Office's head of travel money, said that while holidays are "still a priority" for Brits, people will not get into debt to fund them.
"The message that came out clearly from our holiday budgeting research was that 2012 will be all about affordability," she said.
It was also found that Spain was a top destination for bargains, with eight essential purchases in the country costing lower than in all other destinations apart from Sri Lanka.
