Beach volleyball, Cyprus

With its wide, sandy beaches and warm summer weather, Cyprus might be an ideal place to host one of the world's fastest growing sports - beach volleyball.

Bearing this in mind, the Cyprus Official Beach Volleyball Tournaments have been organised to take place at various resorts this summer.

Tournaments are being run around the country - in which the one-set matches are decided by the Double Knockout system - until later this month.

Schedules can be checked through the organisation's official website, and visitors should also bear in mind that many towns have less formal events going on throughout the summer.

Originating in California in the 1920s, the sport has surged in public recognition since achieving Olympic status in 1996, and is now enjoyed by package holiday makers in many European resorts.

The recent growth in the sport's popularity has also been reflected by the increasing amount of games organised in the UK, with even a round of Grand Prix events - the Urban Beach Tour - taking place this summer at specially constructed "beaches" in city centres around the country.
