Aeroplane traffic points to tourist boom, Cyprus
Increasing numbers of package holiday makers are making their way to Cyprus this summer, it was reported last week.
According to Cyprus' Department of Civil Aviation, aeroplane traffic to and from the island increased in June, in a turn-around from lower-than-expected data in the previous months.
Larnaca's airport in particular - the island's largest - recorded a passenger rise for the month.
Overall, there was a 5.9 per cent rise in overall aircraft traffic - almost matched by the 4.1 per cent rise in passenger numbers at the airport.
Reflecting the ongoing tourist boom of people seeking cheap holidays on Cyprus, Larnaca airport is receiving a 500 million upgrade, including the construction of a new building.
Cyprus' president, Tassos Papadopoulos, has said that the development "will further contribute in many ways to Cyprus' development, offering the island a special place in the eastern Mediterranean region".
Commenced in June last year, the work is estimated to be completed in 2010.
