Adonis and Aphrodite: Cyprus
Latchi in Cyprus is well-known for beautiful red roses and the story of how they came to the area is just as intriguing.
According to the tale, two young lovers- Aphrodite and Adonis, were gripped by a tragedy in Latchi.
Adonis, a bold young hunter, and Aphrodite a beautiful woman, fell in love.
But she became worried that hunting would affect his safety.
One day, her fears were realised as a wild boar stabbed Adonis in his side with a tusk, as Aphrodite rushed to him she cut herself on a bush and made the white roses turn pink with her blood.
The roses then turned red and this legend is said to be the way the roses first came to the area.
Nowadays holiday makers can experience the quiet and beautiful surroundings of Cyprus, and hopefully avoid any wild boars.
Those looking for a walking holiday can take the trails of Aphrodite and Adonis that run through the forest and ancient ruins where the legend was said to have occurred.
Holidaymakers will not want to miss the baths of Aphrodite that are naturally carved from Limestone, and where the goddess used to bathe.
