'Facelift' planned for Larnaca, Cyprus

The historic town of Larnaca in Cyprus is to receive ambitious improvements funded by the Greek government.

The multi-million pound facelift for some of the town's tourist attractions, launched by mayor Andreas Moiseos this week, will see improvements made at the town's main square in Ermou Street and the famous Ayios Lazarus Church - which supposedly contains the sarcophagus of Lazarus in its crypt! The medieval fort area will also receive government money.

Roads will also be widened in the ambitious project, which is expected to provide long-term commercial benefits to the area.

Most tourists' experiences of Larnaca is limited to travelling through the town on their way from and to the nearby airport at the beginning and end of their holiday, though it actually provides much to see and do. Larnaca's excellent transport links due to the airport makes it well within reach for day-trippers.

As well as its picturesque fort and the church of Lazarus, which dates from the 9th century and contains many priceless Byzantine icons, Larnaca also provides a convenient base for excursions to the nearby Great Salt Lake.
