'Breathtaking Cyprus' voted top holiday spot

Holiday makers and editors at TripAdvisor have selected Cyprus as their top island vacation destination this summer, Reuters reported.

The eastern Mediterranean island, thought to be the birthplace of Greek goddess Aphrodite, was applauded for its picturesque beaches, while one traveller asserted that a special highlight of a recent trip to Cyprus was adventuring though the Troodos Mountains.

"You will know what we mean if you take the journey," the traveller wrote on the site. "Breathtaking!"

Kypros.org reports that the Troodos range spreads across much of the western side of the island and features nine churches officially listed as cultural treasures by Unesco.

People taking a villa holiday in Cyprus may wish to rent a car to visit the mountains during their stay, taking in sights such as Mount Olympus - which is 1,971 metres high - and the Byzantine church of Ayios Nikolas tis Stegis (St Nicholas of the Roof), which is considered to be one of the most interesting churches of its type on the island.

Corfu and Crete were also named in the editors' top three island holiday destinations for 2008.
