Wine festival in Crete

Taking place in the Municipal Gardens, the festival will allow wine enthusiasts to taste the varying wines from around the region and the traditional festivals also features a cultural side.

Cretan and Greek folk music is played alongside the wine events and there are plenty of performances for holiday makers to enjoy throughout the day and into the eveing.

Wine was made on the island since the era of the Minoans and during the Roman Empire they were known for their sweetness.

Dionysos, the god of wine-making, is celebrated on the island along with Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos, demonstrating Crete's long association with beverage.

Greece has a long tradition of wine-making and this was confirmed earlier in the year when a study found grape seeds and grape skins and a wine jug covered in wine-residue that dated back nearly 6,500 years ago.
