Why not 'wine and dine' on a Crete villa holiday
Lasting three weeks and taking place in the height of summer, the Cretan Wine Festival has cooled down holiday makers and locals for almost four decades.
"It is not just about getting drunk on free Greek wine from various vineyards, the festival also celebrates traditional Cretan and Greek folklore music with plenty of free performances when the sun goes down," says Whatsonwhen.
The festival delights all who head to the Municipal Garden in July from their villas in the island's north-west.
Vast areas of Crete remain untouched by tourism and those who rent a car can take a day trip out from their villa and really get away from it all by sampling secluded coves, hidden mountain villages and isolated beaches, before retuning to relax by their private pool.
