Villages in Chania, Crete
Chania, the province on the western side of Crete, offers a considerable variety of attractions to visitors.
Apart from the lively tourist resorts at the coasts, the mountain villages inland also prove popular.
A particularly big draw is the village of Therissos, famed for its beauty. Situated at the foot of the White Mountains, it is approached from Chania town through a spectacular gorge.
Neolithic and Minoan settlements have also been discovered in the area.
Tavernas offering local delicacies serve visitors to the village, and the mountainous surrounding landscape also makes it a popular base for rockclimbers, with guarded courses for varying levels along the gorge.
Therissos is regarded with particular affection by Cretans due to its being the site of the headquarters of one of the island's most famous statesmen, Eleftherios Venizelos.
The building, in which the union of Crete with the new Greek state was declared, is now a museum, open to tourists.
