Travellers encouraged to explore whole island during Crete holidays

People planning Crete villa holidays this year have been reminded that the island is about more than good weather and beaches.

Nadine Hallak, a spokeswoman for Cheapflights.co.uk, pointed out that many Greek destinations are seeing a "surge in interest" at the moment as a result of cheap air travel and a rise in the value of the pound against the euro.

Consumers who are encouraged by these trends and decide to book a Crete holiday can take the opportunity to absorb the island's culture and history.

"Crete, known for its picturesque coastline, is also home to a plethora of impressive historical and natural sites," Ms Hallak said. "Heraklion - the island's biggest city - is a must visit, as are the Arhane village, Matala caves and Samaria gorge."

She said that it is easy to be "drawn in" by the destination's "beautiful beaches", but encouraged people taking Crete holidays to "spend some time experiencing the island to get a taste of Greek culture".

Skyscanner recently released figures showing that there was an increase in the number of people searching for flights to Crete in June.
