Traditional Cretan Wedding
Visitors will again be welcomed to a traditional Cretan wedding this year.
The event - which has previously proved a big draw with tourists - will be held in Kritsa, a picturesque town at the north of the island, in late August.
Cretan weddings are renowned even in Greece as being particularly lavish.
In this special ceremony, some of the ancient, pre-Christian traditions of Cretan weddings are preserved, including the serving of braided cinnamon bread decorated with candied fruits and dough cut in the shape of moons and stars - its aroma is said to represent the hoped-for sweetness of the years of matrimony to come.
The wedding ceremony is followed by a feast, to which the bride and groom welcome guests with sugared almonds and liqueur, as well as traditional singing and dancing. Generally, songs will be played on the lyra, the three stringed fiddle common to many Cretan folk songs.
Kritsa, a beautiful town situated where the sea meets the mountains and surrounded by olive groves, represents a perfect setting for this unique insight into Cretan life. Tickets for the event will cost around £5.
