Springtime carnival on a Crete holiday
The Rethymno Carnival, which takes place annually in February and March, weaves traditional Greek culture with contemporary arts to make a three-week party sure to tickle the fancy of travellers enjoying Crete holidays.
Events guide What's On When describes the carnival as a "vibrant showcase of Greek culture" and a glance at the programme suggests that variety is the order of the day, as graffiti, treasure hunting and fancy dress balls rub shoulders with art exhibitions, theatre and dance.
It all comes to a head during the Grand Parade, featuring flamboyant floats designed by each carnival team, which traverse the city spreading springtime celebration to tourists on Crete holidays wherever they go.
Rethymno is situated about an hour away from the Cretan capital of Heraklion, offering tourists a harbour-based sanctuary with a vital lively edge.
