Settlement of Knossos 'a magnificent place' when taking holidays to Crete

Those taking trips to Crete villas have been told why they should visit the settlement of Knossos during their getaway.

Daily Telegraph writer Jenny Cowley recommended the location, after she took a trip there with her family and her son's friend.

Located just three miles south of the capital city of Heraklion, the settlement of Knossos is one of the major tourist attractions of the entire Greek island.

Describing the appeal of the location to those who acquire villas in Crete, Ms Cowley said: "It is a truly magnificent place, with royal quarters, homes for officials, priests and servants, burial grounds, workshops, treasuries and storerooms all built around a paved courtyard."

Some other eye-catching parts of the settlement include giant frescoes, huge ceramic storage jars and a chance to view a labyrinth where a Minatour was once allegedly kept.

Meanwhile, those hoping to visit Crete during the off-season have recently been told by Time magazine writer, Charles McDermid, that the northern port of Chania is "the place to be".
