Seek out authentic culinary experiences on a Crete villa holiday

A travel expert has offered some tips for people who are hoping to find an authentic and enjoyable experience during a Crete villa holiday or any other trip abroad this year.

Writing for the Telegraph, Nick Trend stressed the importance of finding a dining establishment that is not too tourist-based or characterless, but not so locally-oriented that it seems unwelcoming to foreign visitors.

One useful way of finding an authentic experience is to look for restaurants that attract local customers rather than tourists.

Another good indicator of the quality of food on offer at an establishment is whether it is fully booked.

Mr Trend recommended finding an eatery that has no spare tables and making a reservation for the following evening.

The expert also advised looking for venues that are hidden away, rather than heavily signposted, and avoiding those that employ 'catchers' - people who approach passers-by with the aim of gaining some of the lucrative tourist trade.

People planning Crete villa holidays this year will be able to sample a range of foods, from local cheeses to popular main dishes such as chicken and lamb risotto served with goat's butter and 'souvlaki' kebabs.
