Sample some Greek cuisine on a Crete villa holiday

Food lovers planning a Crete villa holiday this summer will have the opportunity to sample some Greek cuisine.

Writer Joanna Blythman recently gave an emphatic endorsement of some of the food available on Crete in an article for the Herald.

She pointed out that Greece's cuisine does not tend to receive the praise reserved for Indian, Spanish and French food, but stressed that there are plenty of gastronomic experiences worth seeking out in the country.

Ms Blythman described the Greeks as "past masters at any dish involving melting lamb" and said she "still dreams" about the "slow-cooked shoulder collapsing off the bone" that she enjoyed at the harbour in Xania, Crete.

People planning Crete holidays might also be interested in paying a visit to Rethymnon, where the writer discovered a bakery selling a variety of baklava, a traditional Hellenic pastry, with freshly toasted nuts, honey, cinnamon and cardamom.

Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and is home to countless beaches and tourist attractions such as the historic sites of Knossos and Phaistos.
