Samaria Village in Crete
In 1962 the Samaria Gorge was declared a national park and the residents of the village were relocated and today the old houses are still standing and house the park's guards.
Visitors to the gorge can still the see the old houses which are a good example of traditional Spanish architecture.
Many hikers also use the spot to take a lunchtime break on their walking trip in the Somaria Gorge.
Apart from walking through the spectacular landscape of Crete, holiday makers can also visit some of the Mediterranean's best beaches including the Mpalos Lagoon.
The shallow lagoon is perfect for families and the white-pink sand and sea shells make it an ideal setting for a relaxing day in the sun.
Crete is also known for its ancient history and holiday makers can visit Aphrodite's rock - the place where the goddess was said to have emerged from the sea.
