Saint Nikolaos day in Crete

Every year on December 6th Saint Nikolaos Day is celebrated throughout Greece and Crete is no different.

His role is the protector of sailors and seamen and is renowned for his good deeds.

At Christmas sailors will recognise the Saint by putting decorations of blue and white lights onto their boats.

This day is the day when Greeks traditionally give presents and it marks the start of the holiday season with a series of feasts.

The traditional view of Saint Nikolaos is quite different from the British view of Santa Claus, Greek tradition has home soaked in brine, dripping with seawater and sweating because of saving ships from the stormy seas.

Visiting Crete during the festival will give holidaymakers a real insight into the traditions of a different culture as well as an opportunity to indulge in the parties and feasts in the area.
