Rent a Crete villa and experience the magic of Vai

Those heading off on Crete holidays will see plenty of beautiful sights as they tour the island, but perhaps one of the most stunning is the palm forest of Vai.

According to the Explore Crete website, Vai is "one of the most beautiful and special places in the whole of the Mediterranean".

Drawing in thousands of visitors every year, the area is home to a vast array of palm trees which are set around a large sandy Blue Flag beach.

Tourists can reach Vai easily by car wherever they are staying, but those renting Crete villas in Agios Nikoloas will be in a great location for a quick visit.

While not the only palm forest in Crete, Vai is definitely the largest, covering an area of 250,000 square metres, so will be a must-see for nature lovers.

It is also home to a large variety of birds, many of them migratory, and is a protected area so is well conserved.

"If you decide to go for a walk in the palm forest, you will see - if you're lucky - a small lake formed by rainwater among the trees," Explore Crete points out.

Once they've wandered through the palms, tourists can chill out on the sands, where sun loungers and umbrellas are readily available.

Watersports are also on offer and there is a cafeteria serving drinks and snacks.
