Rent a Crete villa and enjoy some top excursions

Those planning Crete villa holidays may be looking forward to some much-needed relaxation on the beach, but the island also has a number of historical attractions that make for great days out.

In an article for the Travel Trade Gazette, journalist Phoebe Ferris-Rotman said Crete is rich in history and mythology.

She highlighted some of the best excursions, with a visit to the island of Spinalonga being one of the most popular.

This rocky land mass is home to a crumbling fortress and was used as a leper colony for the first half of the 20th century.

It served as the setting for the bestselling novel The Island by Victoria Hislop.

Other excursions on Ms Ferris-Rotman's list include a trip to Rethymnon, which has one of the most well-preserved old towns in Crete.

Knossos Palace near Heraklion is also worth a visit, the writer insisted, as it was the centre of the Minoan civilisation.

It is believed to be the source of the myth of the labyrinth which was built by King Minos to contain a half man half bull creature known as the Minotaur.

Those renting Crete villas in Bali will be in a great location in the centre of the island, so getting to all of the main attractions will be easy for those who wish to rent a car.
