Potato Festival, Crete
The potato festival at Lassithi, Crete, will be celebrating the region's prime produce over three days at the end of this month.
Family holiday makers will be able to sample many local potato dishes, along with other Cretan recipes, at the many stalls which will dot the small town of Tzermiando, at the centre of the Lassithi plateau to the East of the island, during the festival.
Potatoes feature heavily in the island's cuisine generally, which follows the traditional Mediterranean diet of olive oil, salty cheese, tomatoes and other fresh vegetables.
Tzermiando is the largest of the villages on the Lassithi plateau, encircled by the Dikti mountain range.
Originally settled in the 15th century, the town attracts holiday makers all year round for being found near the site of the Neolithic Trapeza cave. Discovered by British explorers in 1932, daggers, figurines and jewellery have all been excavated from the site in recent years, providing a fascinating insight into the island's pre-Classical past.
The Diktaion Antron - the mythological birthplace of Zeus - is also found nearby.
