Palaiochora summer festival, Crete
The quaint summer festivals seemingly celebrated by every small town in Greece have traditionally provided the package holiday makers who flock to the country in the season with a little local culture.
Festivities at the Cretan town of Palaiochora are no exception, with visitors set to enjoy the puppet theatre performances and traditional music and dancing which come to the town at this time each year.
The festival kicked off last week, and runs until the end of September.
Palaiochora is a small town on a small peninsula in the Chania area to the west of the island. Founded in the 13th century by a Venetian general, it has seen many conquerors and battles in its rich history, and was a focal point in the Battle of Crete during World War II.
While proving a magnet to cheap holiday makers, Palaiochora is also a major agricultural centre on the island - with tomatoes and other produce grown nearby.
The beautiful coastline of the area generally proves a special attraction for tourists - with the clear waters and secluded coves near the town providing excellent bathing.
