Nikos Kazantzakis Museum open to people on Crete villa holidays
Those looking to soak up some of the local culture while on a Crete villa holiday may wish to visit the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum.
Paying respects to one of Crete's most famous sons, the venue holds manuscripts and notes by the revered author.
Kazantzakis was considered to be the leading Greek philosopher of the 20th century, a title placing him in a rich and venerable line of thinkers that stretches back to Aristotle and Plato.
Founded by Greek set and costume designer Yiorgos Anemoyiannis, a member of Kazantzakis' family, the museum also boasts a bounty of photographs, souvenirs, personal mementos and costumes from his theatrical productions.
As the most enduring tribute to such a treasured intellectual, the museum is visited daily by people from all over the world, making it one of Crete's most important attractions.
It welcomes the public throughout the year with daily opening times of 10.00 to 19.00 during October.
Group visits can also be booked to the museum, which is 15km south of Heraklion, while concessions are available for young children.
The museum's main collection consists of artefacts donated by Eleni Kazantzaki, the late author's wife, and hundreds of people around the world who came into contact with Nikos during his travels.
