Mysterious Crete is exciting destination for adventurous travellers
The town of Elounda is one of these places and it lies on the shores of a lagoon that is said to contain the sunken remains of a lost city.
On clear days holiday makers will be able to will be able to see through the calm waters and catch a glimpse of the walls of the ancient city beneath the waves.
The area is a great place for holiday makers to enjoy the warm and sunny climates of the Mediterranean and a good place for a day trip away from the villa pool.
Contained in the lagoon is also a small island called Spinalonga which boasts a Venetian fortress and was, for many years, used as a leper colony.
The small island was also a refuge for Christians during the Turkish occupation as the Venetians had control over the fortress.
But the lagoon is also home to Britomartis, a mermaid goddess, according to Cretan legend, and some believe she still inhabits the local waters.
