Make a Crete holiday an historic experience
Those wanting to take a Crete holiday have been told that they can also experience history on the Greek island.
Jim Eagles, whose father fought on the island during World War Two, told the Nzherald.co.uk that he visited the village of Galatas to follow the same path that New Zealand soldiers once did.
He said that when he reached the hilltop village he was greeted by the "warm hospitality of the local Cretans", one of whom showed him to a street named after New Zealand soldiers – Neozilandon Polemiston, translated as Street of New Zealand Warriors.
Mr Eagles also said that a good spot to learn more about the Battle of Crete is Hill 107, which is located close to Maleme.
"I've read several books on the battle but nothing made it all so clear as standing on that hill, now the site of the German War Cemetery, looking down at the Maleme Airfield," he said.
Those going on a Crete holiday to experience the Greek island's past can also visit a range of sites to do this.
For example, people may want to take a trip to Firkas Fortress, a 17th century structure, Frangocastello Fortress, which dates from the 1300s, or Kissamos Archaeological Museum.
