Lefka Ori shows the 'other side' of a Crete holiday

The White Mountains of Crete - of Lefka Ori - is the largest mountain range on the island and Jane Foster of the Guardian was mesmerised by her recent visit there.

She said: "This is the other Crete. A world away from the seaside resorts of the north coast, the mountainous hinterland is all about sleepy rural villages and dramatic pine-scented gorges."

The range gets its name because it is snow covered between December and early May.

Ms Foster added that, here, alpine scenery rises above lush Mediterranean olive groves, which could create a memorable location to visit for those on a Crete holiday staying in the unspoilt village of Kalami.

Kalami overlooks Souda Bay and may be perfect for a relaxing holiday.
