Knossos 'a must' on Crete holidays
Chris Rowland writes in the Western Mail that the ruined archaeological site is an ideal place for historical exploration on the largest Greek island.
Built by the Minoans in about 1900 BC, the palace can be accessed easily in the capital of Heraklion, the writer observes.
"The Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull creature, roamed the palace's labyrinth until it was slain by Theseus," he explains.
As the largest archaeological site from the Bronze Age, the palace has been rebuilt for ease of access, making it popular with tourists on Crete holidays.
The first excavations of the palace were carried out after its discovery in 1878 by Cretan merchant Minos Kalokairinos.
And anyone exploring the ruins at Knossos this summer could potentially engage in a spot of celebrity watching at the same time, as Jennifer Aniston is reportedly planning to find her roots in her ancestral home later this year.
