Holiday makers going solo

According to a study by Mintel, 5.1 million Britons chose to travel solo during 2008 - up from 4.9 million in 2004.

This increase was attributed partly to rising demand from single people, with two per cent saying they would book a foreign holiday on their own to find love.

Tom Rees, senior travel analyst at Mintel, commented: "As the frequency and variety of holidays have grown in recent years, people have increasingly had the means, desire and opportunity to go on holidays catering to their individual tastes."

He added that by 2031, the number of single people in England and Wales will grow by nearly a third, which means almost half the UK's adult population will be unattached.

This, he stated, means the amount of people planning to take foreign holidays on their own is also likely to increase.

Staying in a villa in Crete could be ideal for this group, as Bill Todd of the Sun recently said the west of the island has something for everyone, before recommending that visitors hire a car to explore its attractions - an ideal solo pursuit.
