Holiday in Crete 'can include time on beautiful beaches'

The provision of a large number of high-quality beaches is arguably one of the top reasons for considering a holiday in Crete.

Christine Marlow, who wrote to the Daily Telegraph to nominate the Greek island as her favourite spot in Europe, says the "beautiful" coastal resorts in the south-west of the destination are a highlight of any trip.

She says even driving around the edge of Crete and taking in the views across the sea is a treat.

Ms Marlow notes she had visited the island twice before but never ventured to its extreme west – something she now heartily recommends to others.

Another of her favourite moments during the holiday in Crete came when walking around Chania with the help of a good guidebook.

A different destination to have received praise recently is Cyprus, which Paul Smith, writing for the Scotsman, said has plenty to offer during both day and night.
