Hit the road on a Crete holiday

Travellers planning Crete villa holidays this summer might be interested in hiring a car and exploring the island's roads to take in as many sights as possible.

Writing for the Calgary Herald, Steve Macnaull described Crete as a "mountainous hulk" that is "best explored by four-wheel-drive vehicle".

The journalist embarked on a climb into the mountains during a full-day Jeep safari, which featured a mix of off-road adventure and cultural attractions accompanied by Greek folk songs on the radio.

People planning Crete holidays can arrange their own visits to the sort of landmarks and locations that featured on the tour, which included a monastery, mountain village and cheese maker.

Mr Macnaull pointed out that visitors can either get behind the wheel themselves or sit in the passenger seat to spend more time enjoying the scenery.

The writer also recommended heading to the beach during a Crete holiday, reserving particular praise for the "crescents of golden sand" that are found in Rethymnon, a resort town on the island's north coast.
