Hiking-mad expat tells of her love of walking, Crete

With many dramatic hills, gorges and a varied, dynamic landscape, Crete has been hailed as a paradise for those on their walking holidays.

Now, a 30-year resident of the island, originally from Britain, has been speaking to the press about her love of hiking on the island.

Talking to the Times over the weekend, Anne Bouras said that she took up exploring the landscape over a decade ago. Walks with friends "always lasted seven or eight hours because we kept getting lost," she said. "I started keeping a diary in case I forgot the way."

She has since written a book, Circular Walks & Gorges In East Crete, now out of print, about her love of walking in the area around her home.

Ms Bouras also admitted that her hobby was quite out of step with the local way of doing things, however, adding that "Greeks don’t go walking unless there is some purpose, such as picking wild greens, which come up after the first rains in September."

Hiking is an ongoing passion for her: "I’m still exploring and coming across places I haven’t been to," she said.

Originally coming to Crete to work for Hertz, Ms Bouras has since married Vasilis, a sailor, and set up a restaurant in Agios Nikolaos.
