Heraklion Summer Festival
Crete's largest city, Heraklion, will be holding its summer festival over the coming months.
Starting on the 1st July and running until late September, the festival is to feature concerts, exhibitions, lectures, dance performances and theatrical plays from both local performers and specially invited guests.
The festival has attracted a diverse list of celebrated performers from the Kirov and Vienna Operas, the Bolshoi Ballet, Joan Baez and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Some of Greece's most celebrated musicians, such as Mikis Theodorakis and Georges Moustaki, have also played at the festival.
The city's two open air theatres - the Oasis and the Manos Hatzidakis - will form a central part to the festivities. Both theatres use the massive fortifications of this ancient city as an acoustic soundboard.
Festival events are also organised for local villages, with nearby Archanes hosting a Wine Festival is organised from August 10th to 15th, among other events. More traditional Greek celebrations, such as the Festival of the Expatriate organised by the village of Kastelli and featuring dances and songs, will also welcome festival-goers this summer.
