Greek myths come to life on Crete holidays
Those enjoying Crete villa holidays will soon discover lots about Greek mythology, they can also let the stories come to life by visiting ancient sites.
For years tourists have flocked to the Minoan palace complex in Knossos which was discovered a century ago.
Scholars claimed it was the original site that inspired the story of Theseus and the Minotaur - a mythical creature that was housed in a labyrinth built by King Minos.
But now a team of archaeologists have suggested that a quarry in Gortyn consisting of a network of underground tunnels could also be the fabled maze.
According to the Independent newspaper, they believe that the ancient Greek myth could be based on either site.
Their claims are sure to attract more holiday makers to the Gortyn quarry to catch a glimpse of the ruins there.
Those renting Crete villas in Bali will be able to reach both the Gortyn and Knossos sites easily by car to decide for themselves which is the original labyrinth.
In Greek mythology, the Minotaur was a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man. It was eventually killed by Theseus, the son of Aegeas.
