Flight stats indicate rise in popularity of Crete holidays
Crete holidays could be a more popular option among Britons this year, with statistics from a flight search engine showing an increase in the number of enquiries relating to the Greek island in May.
Skyscanner revealed that Crete climbed five places to 38th position in its list of the top 50 destinations based on flight searches.
Commenting on the statistics, Barry Smith, the company's co-founder, said that interest in Crete holidays is already beginning to recover following the recent civil unrest in Greece.
The island was one of the biggest climbers in Skyscanner's list of the top 50 destinations in May, along with the likes of Ibiza and Istanbul.
Malaga, Alicante and Palma occupied the top three positions, highlighting the ongoing popularity of holidays to Spain among British travellers.
Tenerife and Faro completed the top five, while Dalaman in Turkey was ranked in sixth place.
Recent political protests in Thailand led to a fall in demand for travel to the country, with Bangkok slipping seven places in the Skyscanner list to 18th.
