El Greco due for release in Crete
Crete is part of the setting for a new film telling the story of the life of Domenikos Theotocopoulos, also known as El Greco.
The film is due for release on October 17th, according to ekathimerini.com and stars Nick Ashdon in the role of the painter.
Filming began in Crete one year ago, when the director, Yiannis Smaragdis, was coordinating the recruitment of a cast and crew for filming at the Iraklion exhibition centre.
The director wanted the movie to speak of Crete's personality and essence.
"I have tried to talk about the spirit of Crete, of Greece, the spirit of the painter which has the particular Greek quality and spirituality," Smaragdis told the website.
El Greco was a painter, a sculptor and an architect during the Spanish renaissance and was born in Crete.
His dramatic and expressionistic style found much appreciation in the 20th century and Nick Ashdon has received an odd reception in Crete.
"When we went to Crete, so many strange things happened. People used to come up to him and touch him, as if he were really El Greco," Smaragdis commented.
