Culture vultures 'should go on Crete holidays'
Events guide What's On When recommends the Rethymno Renaissance and Wine Festival as ideal entertainment for people on Crete holidays between August and September.
The fortress of Rethymno was crucial to efforts to maintain Crete's position in the Aegean Empire of Venice and the battlements now set the scene for an annual renaissance festival, the website notes.
Musical concerts, theatrical performances, contemporary and traditional dance shows, art exhibitions and cinema screenings are all part of the summer timetable.
Visitors can enjoy "views across the blue, blue Aegean Sea as a backdrop to the cultural events on offer", the guide observes.
The bars of the town, meanwhile, play host to a wine festival in the warmest months, showcasing the island's fine wines for connoisseurs on Crete holidays.
According to Travemole, the European Travel Commissions (ETC) European Tourism Insights report revealed that Greece was among the countries that enjoyed increased sector activity last year.
