A Crete holiday can afford travellers the opportunity to explore an ancient past and culture, possibly with a trip to the fascinating Historical Museum of Crete.
The Historical Museum of Crete at Iraklion has a collection of important artefacts charting Cretan history from the Byzantine era.
Located in the neoclassical home of the Kalokairinos family, the museum contains items such as folk art, ceramics, documents and paintings, arranged over three floors.
Highlights of the collection include frescoes from the 13th to the 16th centuries, a painting by Theotokopoulos (El Greco), Byzantine and Venetian jewellery and items from the Cretan insurrections of the 19th century.
Crete has 1,000km of coastline, with bays, coves and sandy beaches, sunshine, clear Mediterranean sea, remains of the Minoan civilization, lively resorts and a host of other attractions.
