Crete villa holidays 'offer something for everyone'
In an article for the Sun newspaper, Bill Todd said western Crete in particular has plenty to offer visitors and he recommended hiring a car to explore.
He stated that families could take a trip to Lake Kournas and hire pedalos or enjoy lunch in one of the tavernas on the banks of the freshwater lagoon.
A day in the city of Chania is also a must for those holidaying in Crete, where tourists can stroll along the old Venetian harbour, which is lined with restaurants.
Mr Todd said one of the best trips on offer in Chania is a voyage out to sea on a glass-bottom boat, which gives visitors a unique glimpse of what's living in the sea around the island and also offers some fantastic views of Crete's coastline.
Tourists eager to take Mr Todd's advice and visit both places could rent a Crete villa in Kalami, which is just ten kilometres from Chania and only a short drive from Lake Kournas.
The village sits atop a cliff overlooking Souda Bay could be the perfect location to watch the sun set over the island.
