Crete picked as a top summer destination
Travel writer Pol O'Conghaile of the Irish Independent has selected Crete as one of the best places for a budget break this year.
He says the birthplace of Zeus is "loaded with Greek history".
Think waterparks, seaside restaurants and "blazingly hot beaches", he adds.
While there this summer, holiday makers could visit the Cretan Wine Festival in July or the Rethymno Renaissance and Wine Festival during the same month.
Those who like to relax on their villa holiday may like to rent a property in the pretty area of Agia Triada in Rethymno, which is surrounded by stunning scenery and is only a few minutes drive from the coast.
People with a hire car can also explore most of what the sun-kissed island of Crete has to offer from this central location.
