Crete holidays hold "formidable ruins"
According to the Independent, a stay in a Crete villa can easily become a roving tour of "formidable ruins" that map out the heritage of an ancient and interesting culture.
Key to Crete's popularity and profile - it is among the most famous of all the Greek islands - is its diversity, the publication suggests.
It combines "sandy beaches, wild mountains and historic towns such as Chania" with the aforementioned ruins, of which the Minoan palace at Knossos is among the most striking.
"Long before mainland Greeks learnt to scratch a few letters, Minoans were building grand buildings as you discover here, at the far end of Europe," states the newspaper.
One option for Crete villa breaks is the resort of Stalos, situated some eight km from Chania and home to a long, sandy beach.
