Crete holidays could offer 'empty beaches and great deals'

Trips to Greece, such as Crete villa holidays, could be the perfect option for people who are searching for an affordable and quiet getaway this year.

According to the Guardian, bookings to Greece are on a downward trend owing to recent political and economic problems, meaning the destination will offer "empty beaches and great deals" this summer.

Despite the bad press that the country has experienced recently, travellers have been reassured that they can enjoy their holidays there as much as ever this year.

Sophia Panagiotaki, director of the Greek National Tourism Organisation, told the Guardian: "Prices are competitive, the service friendlier than ever, and visitors are not at risk in any way."

Nadine Hallak, a spokeswoman for Cheapflights.co.uk, has also suggested that Crete holidays and other trips to Greece could be an affordable option this summer.

She said there is "every possibility" that prices of holiday accommodation and products will fall over the coming months.

A previous example of this trend is Iceland, which saw a large increase in visitor numbers after its economy encountered severe difficulties in October 2008, leading to a substantial fall in costs for tourists.
