Crete hailed as 'perfect' holiday destination
According to Kate Olsen of the South African, Crete is almost a country within a country, as it has its own distinct history and character.
For instance, the island features prominently in Greek mythology as the home of Zeus and the half-man half-bull creature the Minotaur.
Ms Olsen described it as one of the most perfect holiday spots in Europe, which could make it ideal for people planning to stay in a Crete villa this summer.
Indeed, she said "virtually all visitors' whims can be met on this 210-km-long rock".
The island drew strong praise for its year-round sunshine and natural beauty, as well as the romantic charm of its various seaside towns.
Ms Olsen added that Crete also offers a number of attractions for those who are interested in more energetic pursuits, such as the Samaria Gorge - the longest gorge walk in Europe.
